Tacoma, WA Police Rescue 60 Cats From Sailboat Off Owen Beach

Tacoma, Washington police officers responded to reports of an abandoned boat. The call came in on Thursday, August 6. It led them out to the waters off Owen Beach. Officers arrived at the water vessel to assess the situation. What they found inside was entirely unexpected. More than 30 cats and kittens were living aboard in unsafe conditions.

Inside the Abandoned 40-Foot Sailboat

The vessel was anchored off Owen Beach in Tacoma, Washington. Members of the Marine Services Unit boarded the 40-foot sailboat. They found dozens of animals inside. Many of the cats were frightened and malnourished. Rescuing them required patience, care, and a tremendous amount of teamwork.

A Six-Day Coordinated Rescue Mission

Officers immediately coordinated with Animal Control to plan the mission. The department's Forensics Unit also joined the rescue effort. Team members worked carefully during the boat rescue to remove the animals safely. The feline rescue required immense patience from everyone involved. The boat search continued over six days off the coast. Teams operated under the legal authority of a search warrant. Officers made additional trips to the vessel during the week. On August 12, officers safely removed the final cat. In total, local police officers and Animal Control saved 60 cats.

Ongoing Investigation and Community Vigilance

Animal Control believes all cats have disembarked. However, cats are exceptionally good at hiding. Because of this, the Tacoma police team will keep checking the vessel. Marine Services also posted the legally registered vessel yesterday. This step began the official process of having the boat moved. The cat boat incident remains an active criminal case. Anyone who spots a cat on the sailboat should email Animalcontrol@tacoma.gov. Reports should include a photo, date, time, and location. Officials instructed citizens not to board the vessel unless they are the legal owner.
