Dedicated law enforcement officers moved across Florida with one urgent goal in mind. They worked to locate vulnerable missing children and bring them home safely. Their intensive five-day search operation ultimately brought 163 children back to safety. Officers from multiple agencies united to protect young lives from danger.
Uniting Agencies to Protect Missing Children Across Florida
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement led Operation Statewide Shield in August 2026. The five-day initiative brought together state, local, and federal law enforcement partners. Task forces utilized real-time intelligence and coordinated field operations to track down missing youth.
Officers safely located 163 children across Florida and beyond. The recovered youth ranged in age from two months to 17 years old. Many had experienced severe abuse, neglect, exploitation, or exposure to criminal activity.
Regional teams made 46 recoveries in Tampa Bay and 41 in Miami. Additional recoveries included 32 in Jacksonville, 21 in Orlando, and 12 in Fort Myers. Officers also found eight children in Pensacola and three in the Tallahassee region.
Investigators also tracked missing children to six other states and one U.S. territory. Recoveries took place in Alabama, California, Ohio, New York, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Puerto Rico. The international reach spanned 12 foreign countries, including Brazil, Canada, Colombia, and Italy.
Comprehensive Aftercare and Law Enforcement Action
Local police officers transported recovered youth directly to designated recovery hubs. At these hubs, social services, medical providers, and victim advocates offered immediate care. Case information was documented in the Missing Endangered Persons Information Clearinghouse for closure.
The Department of Children and Families and Department of Juvenile Justice handled custody transfers. FDLE Commissioner Mark Glass highlighted the collective focus of all participating agencies. “Operation Statewide Shield demonstrates the power of collaboration and the unwavering commitment shared by all participating agencies and organizations to achieve a singular mission: find our kids and bring them home,” said FDLE Commissioner Mark Glass. “This operation brought together state, local, and federal partners to safely return home 163 missing children.”
Attorney General James Uthmeier commended the multi-agency task force for protecting vulnerable youth. “Many of these kids have been victimized by those who prey on the most vulnerable,” said Attorney General James Uthmeier. “Thanks to the outstanding work of FDLE, the Office of Statewide Prosecution, and our state and local partners, these children are now safe and receiving the care they deserve. Florida will continue leading the recovery of missing children, hunting down every predator, and prosecuting abusers to the fullest extent of the law.” Legal advisors are currently taking on 3 felony cases generated by the operation.
Representative Danny Alvarez emphasized the clear message sent to those who harm children. “The results of this combined law-enforcement operation should make one thing very clear: Florida will never tolerate you harming our children,” said Representative Danny Alvarez. “To every sick person in this society who even tries it, if you think you got away with it you should keep looking over your shoulder every second of your life because we’re coming, and we will never rest in order to protect our children and their futures.”
State officials and health directors emphasized the strength of statewide partnerships. “The success of Operation Statewide Shield reaffirms what partnership can accomplish when government, faith organizations, not-for-profits, and the private sector come together, share their strengths and use their collective expertise to protect children across this state,” said Florida Department of Children and Families Assistant Secretary Jonathan Stephens. “Under the leadership of Governor DeSantis, the Department will continue to foster opportunities to collaborate with local and state partners to maximize our impact.”
Department leaders expressed deep pride in the dedication shown across participating agencies. “The success of Operation Statewide Shield is a testament to the power of state agencies and local support organizations uniting under a common purpose – to protect Florida’s most vulnerable,” said Florida Department of Juvenile Justice Secretary Matt Walsh. “I’m deeply proud of the efforts of our state leaders and sister agencies, our DJJ team members, and the partners who worked tirelessly to bring these children home and provide them with the continuing support they need.”
Behavioral health partners stood alongside law enforcement to support youth healing. “The success of Operation Statewide Shield is evidence of the good work that can be done when community partners work together,” said Tracey Kaly, Director of Clinical Operations for BayCare Behavioral Health. “BayCare is proud to once again stand with our law enforcement partners to do our part to care for vulnerable youth.”
Ongoing Protection and Lasting Community Impact
Law enforcement agencies executed targeted arrests during the five-day operation. Suspects faced charges including lewd and lascivious acts, battery, and custody interference. Sheriff offices in Jacksonville and Lee County assisted with these critical arrests. Thirteen Florida sheriff's offices provided essential field support across state counties.
The operation built upon tactics from prior operations. Operation Dragon Eye located 60 missing children in 2025. Operation Home for the Holidays recovered more than 120 missing children. FDLE Special Counsel Rita Peters served as legal advisor for the initiative.
