Officer Perez Honored After Life Saving Actions in Newborn Emergency
In an inspiring moment of police heroism, a New Mexico State Police officer was recently recognized for his quick-thinking response that saved a newborn’s life.
Officer Ismael Perez received an Axon Award during Axon Week 2025, a national public safety convention that celebrates community protectors across the country. The award recognized Perez’s life saving actions after responding to a call involving a mother who had unexpectedly delivered her baby in a car, and found her newborn unresponsive.
The event occurred on the night of July 24, 2023, when a frantic 911 call reported that a woman had given birth while en route to the hospital. By the time Officer Perez arrived, the family’s car was outside a local hospital, but the baby wasn’t breathing.
Police Bodycam Captures the Rescue
Police bodycam rescue footage shows Officer Perez rushing out of his patrol unit and approaching the car. Inside, the newborn was limp, struggling to take his first breath.
He quickly took the baby into his arms, gently supporting his body.
“Come on, mijo, breathe, breathe, breathe mijo, breathe.”
Perez patted the newborn’s back with care and urgency. Moments later, the baby gasped and began to cry,a sign of life that brought instant relief.
Just as the baby began to breathe, hospital staff arrived and took over care of both mother and child. Thanks to Officer Perez’s police emergency response, both were treated safely inside the ER.
Recognized for Compassion and Bravery
Axon, the company behind the award, praised Officer Perez and other recipients for their commitment to public safety, saying their actions “inspire us to build a safer world.”
Officer Perez’s response is a clear example of police compassion and courage in the face of crisis. His actions embody the kind of behind the badge stories that deserve wider recognition.
He was honored alongside other law enforcement officers from across the country in this year’s police awards list, which included recipients from Illinois, Michigan, Washington, and Nebraska.
