Body camera footage shows Columbus police officers rescuing a man trapped in a burning pickup after his truck accelerated uncontrollably.

The driver of a silver Dodge Ram traveling about 4:40 a.m. Nov. 13 in the southbound on Interstate 71 when he called 911 to report his vehicle was out of control and would not stop accelerating, according to a crash report. He crashed into the bridge for the ramp from eastbound Interstate 270 to northbound Interstate 71.

The video shows officers running to a white pickup that has slammed into a pillar to support the bridge. The truck's hood was engulfed in flames, and the front passenger door was crumpled from the impact.

The male officer tried to open the driver’s side door but dropped the handle. Despite warnings from the other officer to stay back, the female officer tried the passenger door before running to the driver’s side and pulling the door open.

“Burning my hand! Burning my hand!” she yelled to the other officer. She appears to be wearing leather gloves in footage from her body camera.

The two officers pulled the man from the car together and began rendering aid, pulling a flaming shirt from his body.

The driver was transported to a local hospital in critical, life-threatening condition but survived his injuries, according to the crash report.
