Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why do police check room by room during a motel fire?

Police check room by room so no one is missed while the fire grows and the building fills with smoke. Knocking on each door lets officers find people who may not have heard an alarm, may be asleep, or may not know the way out.

2. How do police help evacuate people during a fire?

Police alert people inside, direct them to safe exits, and move them away from the building. Officers also keep the area clear so firefighters can reach the fire, and they help people stay out of harm's way until the scene is safe.

3. How do police and firefighters work together at a fire?

Police usually handle evacuations and keep the area clear, while firefighters fight the fire and search for anyone trapped. Both teams share what they learn with each other so every person can be accounted for and no one is overlooked.

4. What should motel guests do when a fire alarm sounds?

Leave the room right away, use the nearest safe exit, and do not stop for belongings or go back inside. Stay outside and far from the building, and tell responders if anyone may still be inside so they know where to look.

5. What risks do officers face during a motel fire evacuation?

Officers face heat, smoke, and conditions that change fast as they search rooms for people who may be trapped. Fire can spread through walls and attics, so they rely on their training and move quickly to get people out before the danger grows.
