On a rainy Saturday night in Austin, Texas, a routine drive turned into a scary event for one local man and his dog. A bad car crash left a man and his best friend in danger. This story shows the kindness found within the Austin Police Department. While the car was destroyed, the focus quickly moved to saving a dog named Mocha.

Emergency Response on U.S. Route 183

The crash happened on U.S. Route 183. Thomas Guske lost control of his car in the rain and hit a concrete wall. The car rolled over. Guske was okay, but his dog, Mocha, was hurt very badly. Guske did not want help for himself. He told the officers that his only goal was to get his dog to a vet. Mocha had a badly hurt leg and injuries to her heart and lungs from the impact.

Sergeant Mewis Goes Above and Beyond

Sgt. Ben Mewis of the Austin Police Department saw that the dog needed help right away. He knew that Mocha might not live if they waited. Sgt. Mewis did something special. He put Thomas Guske and Mocha in his police car. He then drove them straight to the nearest animal hospital. Sgt. Mewis said he loves animals and could not just stand by while Mocha suffered.

A Path to Recovery for Mocha

Because the officer moved so fast, vets were able to help Mocha. She had to have one of her legs amputated, but she survived. She is now on the mend from her internal injuries. Thomas Guske is very thankful for the sergeant’s help. He said that Mocha likely would not be alive today if the officer had not stepped in. The officer did much more than his normal job to save a life.
