LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Police in a southern Indiana city lent a helping hand to one of its citizens recently, a canine citizen.
On Saturday, Jan. 25 a little before noon, North Vernon City Police were dispatched to the 300 block of Flintwood Drive for an animal emergency, according to a social post on the department's Facebook page. North Vernon is about 60 miles northeast of Louisville.
Officers were told by dispatch that a dog was stuck in the frozen Muscatatuck River.
Upon arrival, North Vernon Police Officer Chris Allen saw the dog, named Dino, stuck in the frozen river and located the owner on scene. The owner said he was unable to make his way down the steep hill to rescue the dog, with fear of falling in the icy river as well.
Officer Allen went onto the frozen river, to try and free Dino. Then, Sgt. Lucas Newsom, also with North Vernon Police, arrived on scene and joined the rescue. North Vernon Fire Department was also on scene assisting.
Ultimately, Officer Allen and Sgt. Newsom were able to free Dino from the ice. Dino was reunited with his family, and he didn't have any life-threatening injuries. Dino's family told police he is "doing great."
