BUFFALO GROVE, IL — Local police agencies will be handing out tickets to kids again this summer, but not the kind they typically write up. For the 29th year, 7-Eleven is partnering with police departments to distribute free Slurpee coupons to children through the Operation Chill community service program.

Among the participants is the Buffalo Grove Police Department. Throughout the summer, officers will engage with young people in the community and distribute the Slurpee coupons as a reward for good deeds, constructive activities and acts of kindness.

According to BGPD, appropriate "offenses" could include helping others, deterring crime, wearing a bike helmet and other acts of safety, or by participating in a community or police-sponsored events.

"Rewarding positive behaviors fosters better relationships between our local children and our police officers, and it promotes a culture of kindness," Police Chief Brian Budds said. "Our local youth are our future, and this program helps them build others up and foster pride and community spirit."

The Operation Chill program that started in 1995 in Philadelphia. Since its inception, more than 24 million Slurpee coupons have been given out as part of Operation Chill.
