Detective Eddie Barrett of the NYPD Warrant Squad doesn’t believe in excuses.

Known as "50Cal" online, Barrett, 35, has gained a massive following by posting his daily training regimen. With 21 years of uninterrupted workouts behind him, Barrett wakes up at midnight on workdays, starts with an ice bath, and trains before heading into his Bronx assignment rounding up dangerous fugitives.

“Getting my training in is of utmost priority,” Barrett told Fox News Digital. “No matter where I am, what time I gotta wake up, or whatever I have going on, I will train.”

His schedule is demanding. After a full workout, Barrett puts in a 12-hour shift from 3:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., then spends time with his family before sleeping by 8 p.m. Weekends are no different, he trains early to leave the rest of the day free for loved ones.

Even while vacationing in the Cayman Islands, he was seen sprinting on the beach in the dark with a headlamp before hitting the gym.

Training Built on Discipline and Duty

Barrett’s hybrid training approach combines heavy lifting with intense cardio. His philosophy: physically fit police officers are better prepared to protect the public—and themselves.

“If [a suspect] wants to run or wants to fight, they will lose, because you’ve trained hard to be at a higher level than them,” Barrett said.

His workouts aren’t just physical, they’re mental. He uses what he calls “mind tricks” to get moving in the early hours, like counting down from three or saying a short prayer before launching into the day.

“You just can’t give yourself a second option ever,” he said. “There is no snooze button. There is no scrolling on social media.”

A Legacy of Service, Anchored in Family

Inspired by his grandfather, a New Jersey officer, Barrett proudly wears his badge on a necklace. His son has already voiced his desire to follow in his footsteps.

“I feel like I live the best life,” Barrett said. “Even in today’s crazy climate … being a cop is a great job.”

He emphasizes that fitness is not about ego, but readiness. “You want to have an appearance and a level of confidence in your fitness that demands respect.”
