A Record-Breaking Day of Kindness
In Berkeley, Missouri, more than 200 police departments came together in a powerful tribute, not for an officer, but for a child. On a mission to honor other children fighting cancer, 13-year-old DJ Daniel was sworn in as an honorary officer by 203 law enforcement agencies in a single day, smashing his goal and setting a world record.
What began as a personal dream has now become a symbol of hope, resilience, and the deep bond between communities and law enforcement.
Fighting Cancer with Courage and Purpose
DJ, a Texas native, has been battling brain cancer for six years. Doctors initially gave him just months to live. But with 13 surgeries behind him, DJ continues to defy the odds and inspire the nation.
“One step at a time,” DJ said when asked how he keeps going. “Stay blessed, believe in God, have faith.”
His infectious positivity has earned him admiration not only from police departments but also from public figures. Last month, DJ was even made an honorary member of the U.S. Secret Service.
A Boy’s Dream and a Nation’s Response
Tuesday’s ceremony in Missouri marked the culmination of DJ’s mission: to be sworn in by 1,000 police departments across the country. Before this week, he had already collected more than 900 honorary law enforcement titles.
“We just need something good to hold onto from time to time. What a better story,” said one officer at the event.
As DJ stood in uniform and saluted alongside fellow officers, he reflected on the meaning behind the mission.
“That was pretty cool,” DJ said about his Secret Service honor. “But this was pretty cool too, and I know that President Trump is probably watching this… but I’m sorry to say that.”
Faith in the Fight
DJ's journey has touched countless lives, but perhaps no one more than his father, who has driven him across the country for years to support this goal. In a moment of heartfelt reflection, DJ’s father said:
“I used to be mad because I felt like this was a punishment… Now I sit back and say, I get on my knees and say, ‘Thank you, God, for putting me through all this suffering.’ It wasn’t in vain.”
For his unwavering support, DJ’s dad was also honored with a “Father of the Year” award at the ceremony.
More Than Badges
DJ Daniel may now be a world record holder, but his journey is about far more than numbers. He has become a symbol of strength, a beacon of light for kids battling cancer, and a young ambassador for what law enforcement can stand for, compassion, service, and community unity.
“He’s just a great inspiration,” said one officer. “A big brother to those kids, they look up to him.”
