In the early light of morning, the quiet routine of Sevierville, Tennessee was interrupted by a desperate call for help. The French Broad River, a scenic landmark, became the backdrop for a tense life-and-death situation. It was a moment where training, bravery, and unwavering commitment would be put to the ultimate test.
A Man in Crisis on a Fragile Ledge
Just before 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 8, 2026, the Sevierville Police Department (SPD) received a distressing report. An individual was on the edge of a long-closed sky bridge, seemingly intending to end his life. The structure itself, no longer in use, was in a state of decay, adding another layer of extreme danger to an already critical situation.
Immediate Response and Heroic Action
Officers from various units within the Sevierville Police Department, including the Crisis Negotiation Team, Patrol Division, Community Resource Unit, Criminal Investigation Division, and Command staff, rushed to the scene. Their goal was clear: to save a life.
Detective Sergeant Dweese Milliron, the lead negotiator, and crisis counselor William Rickels cautiously made their way onto the hazardous bridge. Their immediate priority was to connect with the man and offer hope. Despite their efforts, the man let go of the railing.
In a split-second, instinct and training took over. Sergeant Milliron and Rickels grabbed ahold of him just as he began to fall. Other officers who had been standing by, watching the deteriorating conditions of the bridge with concern, didn't hesitate. They ran onto the crumbling structure, boards breaking under their feet, to assist.
One officer can be heard on body camera video, shouting, "Help, help, help," as they all joined the desperate struggle. Sergeant Milliron later admitted, “You’re scared to death, scared you’re going to drop him." Lt. Graham Brantley, who also assisted, emphasized the gravity, stating, "It was pretty evident he was still in a state... trying to get them to elicit some sort of response... acknowledge that he knew he was okay... that was the ultimate goal." Inch by inch, with collective strength, they pulled the man back over the railing to safety.
A Community's Gratitude
A total of 15 dedicated Sevierville officers played a role in this remarkable rescue. Chief Joseph Manning expressed his immense pride, stating, “These men and women put their own lives in harm’s way to save a man who was in obvious crisis. We are so thankful that the man was unharmed and is safe."
The man was transported for medical evaluation, and thankfully, neither he nor any of the officers sustained serious injuries, only minor scrapes and bruises. Sergeant Julio Cruz reflected on the power of collaboration, noting, “We couldn’t do it as a single individual, had to take a team effort to do it."
This dramatic event serves as a powerful reminder of the compassion and dedication that law enforcement officers bring to their duty every day. Their quick thinking, bravery, and seamless teamwork not only prevented a tragedy but also demonstrated the profound impact of empathy and community service.
