WEST ORANGE, NJ – The Blue Envelope Program started in Connecticut in 2020 and has since been adopted by many police departments in New Jersey, California, Pennsylvania, New York and other states. It is a growing trend among law enforcement agencies nationwide to help increase better community policing practices and awareness.
The Blue Envelope Program is an important safety initiative aimed at assisting drivers with autism and other similar conditions. It is designed to foster safer interactions between law enforcement and individuals who may experience unique challenges while on the road.
A driver with autism may have physical movements or verbal responses during a traffic stop that are beyond their control. The Blue Envelope Program provides clear, simple notification to responding police officers to help them adjust their actions and responses to better accommodate specific needs of the situation.
The Blue Envelope is a simple, discreet envelope where drivers can store their registration, insurance card and other documents typically requested during a traffic stop. It is simply an organizational tool that contains clear printed instructions for the driver and important information for West Orange Police Officers. The Blue Envelope is not retained by responding officers and returned to the driver. Additionally, the envelope provides officers with emergency contact information.
Families or individuals in West Orange who would like to participate can request an application from the WOPD Community Services Unit located at 92 Washington Street.
